Fellow has served as president and vice president of the board of directors of Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District since his election in 1991. He also has served as an alternate on the San Gabriel Valley Water Quality Authority, an organization responsible for the cleanup of one of the nation’s most contaminated underground water supplies. In 1995, Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina appointed him to the county’s Water Appeals Board. He was nominated by Sen. Dianne Feinstein for a position in the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation during the Clinton Administration.
Professional and community activities:
Fellow is a chair of the Department of Communications at California State University, Fullerton and oversees the department’s concentrations in journalism, advertising, public relations, photocommunications and entertainment studies.
Fellow teaches courses in history and philosophy of American mass communications, communications law, principles of communication research, media effects, and graduate courses in international communications, American media history, media and politics, and communication and governance. In addition, he has been an adjunct professor of journalism in the Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism at the University of Southern California.
Named a 2007 Fulbright Scholar by the U.S. Presidential Commission in Washington, D.C., he received Italy’s highest Fulbright honor, the Vercelli Chair of Twentieth Century Media History at the University of Piemonte. He founded the Department of Communications’ Summer Media Institute in Florence, Italy, where he teaches each summer.
Author of three books—“American Media History,” “The Copy Editors’ Handbook for Newspapers” and “News Writing in A Multi-Media World”-- Fellow has written numerous journal articles on health communications and has presented his health research at international conferences. He continues to write newspaper columns on politics and water issues.
Prior to teaching, Fellow was a reporter, political columnist and city editor during his 10 years with the San Gabriel Valley Tribute, where he covered the presidencies of Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter for the then Thomson Newspapers.
Fellow received his master’s and doctorate degree from USC’s Annenberg School for Communication, where he was a Walter H. Annenberg Fellow. He also has a master’s degree in communications from Cal State Fullerton and a bachelor’s degree in journalism and history from California State University, Los Angeles. In addition, he has done graduate work in political science in Soviet and Latin American politics.
He has been very active in his community. He serves on the executive board of the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership and was vice mayor and councilman in the City of El Monte for seven years. He and his wife, Clara Potes-Fellow, is director of media for the California State University and a spokesperson for Chancellor Charles Reed. She also served as press secretary for Bill Clinton during his presidential race. She is author of “Women of Hope.” He resides in Arcadia.
